After postering several pieces of her artwork throughout Rome in February 2019, street artist Alessia Barrow was shocked to discover, through a fellow artist, that the Vatican had stolen her image.

The image, used by the Vatican as its Easter postage stamp in 2020, features Christ with a human heart and the words “just use it” across the chest and is part of a series Barrow has been working on since 2013.

This case of stolen artwork, currently a lawsuit in the Italian court, is particularly strange, as the Vatican itself has incredibly high standards when it comes to protecting the art it holds from reproduction.
